The map

About this Alagir map poster

Alagir is a town in North Ossetia–Alania, in the Russian North Caucasus. It lies on the Ardon River, where the river leaves the mountains and enters the plain. The town grew in the mid-nineteenth century around a silver and lead smelter that processed ore from the valleys upstream. Today it is best known as the starting point of routes into the high Caucasus.

From above, Alagir's streets form a mostly regular grid set against the river. The Ardon runs along the town in a wide, braided channel with gravel bars, fed by mountain meltwater. To the south the ground rises quickly, and roads squeeze into the Ardon gorge. The Transcaucasian Highway continues south through this gorge toward the Roki Tunnel and the Ossetian Military Road leads west toward the Mamison Pass.

An Alagir map poster shows the town on the threshold between two landscapes. On one side are the ordered streets of the plain. On the other is the river valley, narrowing as it leads into the mountains. The braided riverbed adds a loose, hand-drawn texture that sets this map apart from a simple street grid.

01

Braided Ardon River

The river spreads into several channels divided by gravel islands. It forms a wide, textured band that runs through the composition beside the town.

02

Gateway to the gorge

South of town the main roads funnel into the narrowing Ardon valley. The map clearly marks where the flat land ends and the mountain passage begins.

03

Plains grid

Residential streets are laid out in fairly regular blocks on the level ground. This gives an ordered counterweight to the irregular river and the mountain terrain.
