The map
Ambur is in northern Tamil Nadu, in the Palar River valley, between the Eastern Ghats hills and the plains that lead toward Chennai. The main highway between Chennai and Bengaluru runs right past it, and the town stretches along this corridor. From above, it is long rather than round, with an older dense centre and newer areas spreading along the road.
The town is known for two things. It is one of India's major centres of leather and footwear manufacturing, with tanneries and factories that export worldwide. It also gives its name to Ambur biryani, a distinctive regional style. On the map, factory compounds appear as larger blocks among the fine residential streets.
An Ambur map poster shows the long highway line, the wide, often dry bed of the Palar, and the rocky hills that rise at the edges of the valley. It is a clear portrait of a working town, shaped by trade and industry along one of south India's main roads.
The Chennai–Bengaluru highway runs along the town as a strong, straight line, and much of Ambur's growth has followed it.
The broad, sandy bed of the Palar River crosses the valley, a wide pale band on the map that often carries little water.
Leather and footwear factories occupy larger compounds among the housing, and their broad plots break up the fine residential street pattern.
