The map
Anhua is a town in the mountainous south of Gansu Province, in the hill country of Longnan where the land folds into deep valleys. On a map the settlement is shaped by terrain more than planning: buildings and roads crowd onto the flat ground along the valley floor, and the town stretches out rather than spreading wide.
A main road runs through the valley and serves as the town's spine, with shorter streets reaching toward the slopes on either side. Beyond the built-up strip the lines thin quickly into fields and paths climbing the hillsides, so the drawing shows a clear core surrounded by open, contoured ground.
Little of this region appears in international guidebooks, which makes a map of it all the more personal. An Anhua map poster presents the town in fine black line work, with the valley corridor and its edges giving the composition a natural direction and the surrounding hills left calm and uncluttered.
The town follows the course of its valley, forming an elongated shape in which almost every street relates to the single main road running along the valley floor.
Small tracks leave the town and climb the slopes, appearing on the map as thin, irregular lines that fade into the open ground around the settlement.
Southern Gansu is steep, folded country, and the map shows the town as a narrow built-up band held between hillsides that occupy most of the frame.

Why Anhua
People who grew up in the valleys of Longnan, or who have family there, often find that a map says more than a photograph. It shows the whole shape of the place at once, the road you took in and out, and the hills that closed around it.
The title, subtitle and coordinates line can all be edited, so the poster can carry a name, a date or a short dedication. Select one of five styles, from Classic black & white to Paper, then download the HD files or order a print.
