The map

About this Artvin map poster

Artvin is the capital of Artvin Province, close to the Georgian border. Few towns in Turkey sit on such steep ground. The town clings to a mountainside high above the Çoruh River, and its streets zigzag up the slope in tight hairpins, linking one terrace of buildings to the next. On a map, the road network looks folded into itself.

The Çoruh runs through a deep, narrow valley below the town, and its course has been changed by a chain of large dams, including the Deriner Dam just upstream of Artvin. The reservoirs appear on the map as long, narrow bodies of water squeezed between mountains. Dense forest covers much of the surrounding land, broken only by winding roads and small villages.

Artvin is known for its green, heavily wooded landscape and for the Kafkasör festival held each summer on a nearby plateau, where the bullfighting between bulls is the main event. An Artvin map poster captures a town shaped entirely by relief. Almost every line on it bends because the mountain gave it no other option.

01

Hairpin streets

Roads turn back on themselves again and again as they climb the slope, forming a dense zigzag pattern that is unlike almost any flat city.

02

Çoruh valley

The river runs in a deep gorge below the town, now partly flooded by dam reservoirs that appear as long, narrow shapes between steep sides.

03

Forested ridges

Wooded mountains surround the town on every side, leaving only thin road lines and scattered villages visible across the rest of the map.

Why Artvin

A map that means something

Artvin's shape is unforgettable to anyone who has driven its switchbacks or looked down at the river from the town. On a wall, its folded streets make a striking, almost abstract drawing.

You can edit the title, subtitle and coordinates line to name a neighbourhood, a family or a year. Choose one of five styles: Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand.
