The map
As Sallūm is the last Egyptian town on the Mediterranean coast before the border with Libya. Seen from above, it sits at the head of the Gulf of Sollum, a curved bay protected from the open sea. A short, low grid of streets fills the narrow strip of flat land between the water and the high plateau that rises sharply inland.
The escarpment is the main feature of the map. It climbs from near sea level to the desert tableland, and the road towards the frontier winds up its face in tight bends. On a print, the town looks small beside the long curve of the shoreline and the heavy contour of the cliff. The whole design has a strong, sparse, graphic look.
The area saw heavy fighting in the Western Desert campaigns of the Second World War, and a Commonwealth war cemetery lies near the town. An As Sallūm map poster records a frontier place where coast, cliff and desert meet in a very small space, with the town in a simple black line on white.
The bay curves in a wide arc in front of the town. Its calm water gives the composition a strong, clean edge, with the harbour sitting at the inner shore.
Behind the town, the road climbs the plateau edge in tight switchbacks. It is one of the most distinctive linear shapes on this stretch of North African coast.
Past the escarpment, the map empties into open tableland with only a few roads crossing it. That emptiness gives the small built-up area around the bay extra weight.
