Numbered districts
The city is divided into distinct neighbourhoods, each forming its own enclosed pattern of curving streets, which gives the map a modular, almost cellular appearance.

The map
Ash-Shaykh Zāyid, usually called Sheikh Zayed City, is a new town on the western desert plateau of Giza, beyond the Pyramids and close to 6th of October City. On a map it appears as a series of self-contained districts, each with its own looping internal streets, separated by wide avenues and set against open desert.
The city was developed from the 1990s with funding linked to the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development and is named after Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the founding president of the United Arab Emirates. It has grown into a sought-after residential area, with compounds, shopping centres and schools drawing families from central Cairo.
An Ash-Shaykh Zāyid map poster shows the precise, planned geometry typical of Egypt's new cities. Rings of houses and gardens, straight arterial roads and the sharp edge where streets meet sand all read clearly in black and white, giving the print a clean, modern character quite unlike the dense fabric of older Cairo.
The city is divided into distinct neighbourhoods, each forming its own enclosed pattern of curving streets, which gives the map a modular, almost cellular appearance.
The Cairo–Alexandria Desert Road runs along one side of the city, a long straight line that links it to Cairo and northward to the coast.
Beyond the last streets the map opens into empty desert, a sharp edge that makes the planned layout of the city especially easy to read.

Why Ash-Shaykh Zāyid
