The map

About this Assomada map poster

Assomada is the seat of Santa Catarina municipality, in the interior of Santiago, the largest island of Cabo Verde. Unlike the coastal towns, it lies in the island's higher, greener centre. The streets follow ridges and slopes, and the map is shaped by terrain: winding roads, terraced plots and deep valleys that break the town into distinct parts.

Assomada is known for its large market, one of the busiest on the island, where produce from the interior's farms is traded. The main road through the island passes through the town, linking Praia in the south with Tarrafal in the north, and the mountains of the Serra Malagueta rise to the north.

An Assomada map poster captures a side of Cabo Verde that most visitors miss: the agricultural highlands rather than the beaches. In black and white, the curving roads and the steep, unbuilt valleys between them give the print a strong sense of relief.

01

Ridge-top streets

The town's roads follow the higher ground, bending with the landscape and giving the map a curving, branching pattern instead of a grid.

02

The island road

The main road between Praia and Tarrafal runs straight through Assomada. It is the longest continuous line on the poster, crossing it from edge to edge.

03

Valley gaps

Steep valleys between the ridges remain largely unbuilt, forming open channels through the town that emphasise its hilly setting.
