About this Ataq map poster
Ataq is the administrative centre of Shabwah Governorate in southern Yemen, a town set on high, arid ground well inland from the Gulf of Aden coast. On a map it reads as a small, dense cluster of streets surrounded by wide empty terrain, and that contrast between built grain and open land is what gives it its character from above.
The street pattern is irregular rather than planned, with lanes that bend around older blocks and roads that reach out towards neighbouring settlements across the plateau. Seasonal watercourses leave faint traces on the land around it, and the main routes into town show up as the strongest lines on the sheet.
