The map
Bad Salzuflen lies in the Lippe district of North Rhine-Westphalia, just east of Bielefeld. It grew up around saline springs that were used for centuries to make salt and later for health treatments, and it developed as a spa town from the nineteenth century. On a map its historic centre is compact and irregular, with narrow streets around the old market square.
Next to the old town, the Kurpark stretches out as a large green space with winding paths, ponds and gardens. At its edge stand the Gradierwerke: tall timber graduation towers packed with blackthorn brushwood, over which salt water trickles to concentrate the brine. Once industrial structures, they now serve as open-air inhalation areas.
The rivers Bega and Salze meet in the town, and their channels thread through the centre and the park. A Bad Salzuflen map poster shows how the spa grounds, the old town and the surrounding residential districts fit together, with the rolling Lippe countryside and nearby villages filling the edges of the frame.
The long timber Gradierwerke appear on the map as narrow, straight structures at the edge of the spa grounds. Their geometry is unusual for any town plan.
The spa park's curving paths and ponds form a large, calm area next to the historic centre, and it is one of the most distinctive shapes on the poster.
Narrow medieval streets gather around the market square. The Bega and Salze thread through them, adding thin, winding lines to the dense core.
