Long, narrow plots packed along the older streets give the centre a finely striped texture. It's typical of the Sino-Portuguese trading districts of the Malay peninsula.

The map
Ban Talat Nua sits inside the urban core of Phuket Town, on the east side of the island. Streets are short and closely packed. Narrow lots crowd the main roads, and small lanes run between them into the backs of blocks. Everything is drawn at a close scale, so the grain of old commercial frontage shows up well once the map is reduced to lines.
The name means northern market, and the area grew around trade that served the tin-mining economy of Phuket's past. That period left rows of Sino-Portuguese shophouses in the older streets of town. From above they read as long, thin blocks with continuous frontages, quite unlike the resort layouts on the island's west coast beaches.
A Ban Talat Nua map poster frames Phuket's everyday town side rather than its beaches. You see a knot of streets, the main roads carrying traffic across the island, and toward the edge the water and mangrove fringes of the eastern shore. In black and white the density of the place comes through clearly, and the fine detail holds up at larger print sizes.
Long, narrow plots packed along the older streets give the centre a finely striped texture. It's typical of the Sino-Portuguese trading districts of the Malay peninsula.
A handful of main roads collect the smaller streets and carry them out of town. They link the quarter with the rest of Phuket Island and its outer districts.
Toward the east the built-up grid thins out into the quieter shoreline around Phuket Bay. Here the island's town and the sea meet without a wide beachfront.

Why Ban Talat Nua
People who lived in Phuket Town, or who came back to it again and again, often want the place that isn't on the postcards. A map of these working streets is a quiet reminder of mornings at the market, the old shophouse rows and the town that goes on after the tourist season ends.
You can make the print personal with a title of your choosing and a date, such as a move or a first visit. Then pick one of five styles: Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. The HD digital files cost $9, and printed posters ship from partners in more than 30 countries.
