The map

About this Ban Talat Yai map poster

Ban Talat Yai is the central subdistrict of Phuket Town, the historic commercial heart of Phuket island. From above, it is a dense network of streets lined with narrow shophouses, bordered by low hills to the west and extending toward the island's eastern coast. Unlike the resort beaches on the west side, this is a working town with markets, schools and offices.

The area grew in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries on the wealth of tin mining, which attracted Hokkien Chinese traders and labourers. Their legacy is the Sino-Portuguese architecture along streets such as Thalang Road, where colourful facades and arcaded walkways survive in a remarkably intact old quarter.

A Ban Talat Yai map poster brings the old town's close-knit grid into focus, with the surrounding hills and roads leading outward. It is a strong, detailed image for anyone who has explored Phuket beyond the beaches.

Old town grid

Narrow streets of shophouses form a compact, closely spaced pattern that becomes the most intricate area of the poster.

Thalang Road

This street of restored Sino-Portuguese shophouses is the best-known thoroughfare of the old quarter and a clear line through the centre.

03

Hills and coast

Wooded hills rise on the western edge while roads run toward the eastern shore, framing the dense town in open space.
