Central grid
Straight streets and square blocks around the central park form a regular pattern that makes the heart of the map particularly clean and easy to read.

The map
Baní is the capital of Peravia province, about an hour's drive west of Santo Domingo. Unlike many towns on this coast, the city stands slightly inland, on a flat plain between the foothills of the Cordillera Central and the Caribbean. From above, its centre is a clear colonial-style grid of square blocks arranged around a central park and church.
The grid extends outward before breaking into newer districts along the main highway, which runs through town toward Azua in the west. To the south the landscape opens toward the coast at Las Calderas, where the Baní dunes, among the largest in the Caribbean, and old salt pans form a pale, bare area on the map, very different from the green island most people picture.
Baní is known as the birthplace of Máximo Gómez, who became commander of Cuba's independence army, and for its mangoes, celebrated at an annual mango fair. A Baní map poster shows the orderly town centre and the roads leading out toward the coast and the hills, a composition that reads well in any of the five styles.
Straight streets and square blocks around the central park form a regular pattern that makes the heart of the map particularly clean and easy to read.
The main road between Santo Domingo and Azua crosses the city as a strong line, with newer neighbourhoods spreading from it on both sides.
South of town the street network gives way to open ground and the coast at Las Calderas, where dunes and salt pans leave wide empty spaces.
