The map

About this Banī Suhaylā map poster

Banī Suhaylā lies in the southern Gaza Strip, just east of Khan Yunis, on the low coastal plain that slopes gently towards the Mediterranean. On a map the town merges almost seamlessly with its larger neighbour. Its streets form a dense but irregular pattern around an older core, and the buildings spread out along the roads that lead further inland.

East of the town, the map traditionally showed a patchwork of small agricultural plots, greenhouses and orchards reaching towards the eastern boundary of the Strip. The land is flat and sandy, with no rivers, so the pattern comes mainly from roads, field divisions and the gradual thinning of buildings as the town gives way to farmland.

A Banī Suhaylā map poster can hold the layout of a place as people remember it: the familiar streets, the short route to Khan Yunis and the fields on the edge of town. For families from here and for those living far away, the plain lines of a street map can carry a great deal of personal meaning.

01

Beside Khan Yunis

The town lies directly east of Khan Yunis, and on the map the two form an almost continuous built-up area in the south of the Strip.

02

Coastal plain

Flat, sandy ground slopes gently west towards the Mediterranean. The pattern comes from streets and field lines rather than hills or rivers.

03

Agricultural edge

The eastern side of the town historically gave way to small farm plots and orchards, creating a looser grid of paths and field boundaries.
