The map
Bayt al Faqīh lies on the Tihama, the hot coastal plain that runs along Yemen's Red Sea shore, inland from Al Hudaydah. The land is flat and open, and the town appears on the map as a compact, irregular core of lanes and courtyards, with newer building spreading along the roads that connect it to the coast and to the highlands further east.
For a long period the town was one of the most important coffee markets in Arabia, where beans from the mountains were traded before moving on to the Red Sea ports. Its name refers to a religious scholar associated with its founding, and a weekly market remains central to its identity as a trading place for the surrounding plain.
Around the town, cultivated land and seasonal watercourses break up the plain, with fields fed by floods that come down from the mountains. A Bayt al Faqīh map poster draws out that relationship between a dense old centre and the wide, flat country it has served for centuries, reduced to fine black lines on a quiet background.
The oldest lanes cluster tightly around the market area, forming a dense, irregular pattern that reflects the town's long role as a trading place on the plain.
The surrounding land is almost completely flat, so roads run long and straight across it, radiating toward the coast and the foothills of the western highlands.
Watercourses that fill after mountain rains cross the plain nearby, appearing as faint, branching lines among the fields that depend on their floods.

Why Bayt al Faqīh
The map is a way to hold on to a place with a long history in the coffee trade, and for Yemeni families abroad it can be a personal link to home. The dense centre and open plain make a balanced, understated composition.
Personalise the title, for example in the town's own spelling, along with a subtitle and the coordinates line. Choose Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand, and download the HD files for $9 or order a printed poster with an optional frame.
