The map
Bayt Hanun, often written Beit Hanoun, lies at the northeastern edge of the Gaza Strip, close to the boundary and to the Erez crossing. For generations it was known as an agricultural town, surrounded by orchards and fields, with the built-up area gathered around a central core and spreading outward along the main roads.
On the map, the town appears as a dense cluster of streets that loosens toward its edges, where fields and orchards once filled the spaces between houses. Roads connect it southward toward Jabalia and Gaza City, and the nearby boundary line gives the settlement a strongly defined northern and eastern limit.
In recent years Bayt Hanun has been severely affected by conflict, and much of what the map records has been damaged or lost. A Bayt Hanun map poster can serve as a record of the streets as families knew them, keeping the shape of a home town present and remembered.
The oldest part of town forms a compact knot of streets and lanes, from which newer neighbourhoods spread outward in a looser pattern.
Open areas around the town recall the orchards and fields for which Bayt Hanun was long known, softening the edges of the composition.
Main routes lead southward toward neighbouring towns in the northern Gaza Strip, forming the lines that connect Bayt Hanun to the wider region.
