The map

About this Bitola map poster

Bitola lies at the southern edge of North Macedonia, where the wide Pelagonia plain meets the mountains to the west. From above, the city is a dense cluster of streets gathered around the small Dragor river, which runs through the centre in a straight channel. To the west, the street grid thins out as the ground rises toward Pelister and the Baba range.

The centre follows an older pattern. The pedestrian street known as Širok Sokak runs as a long, straight line through the middle of town, and the Old Bazaar area packs its lanes tightly nearby. Bitola was once called the city of consuls, since several foreign consulates were based here in the Ottoman period, and that past still shows in its layout.

A Bitola map poster shows the contrast between the tight centre and the open farmland of the plain around it. The Dragor gives the composition a clear line through the middle, and the edge of the mountains adds weight on one side. Just south of the city are the remains of ancient Heraclea Lyncestis, a reminder of how long people have lived here.

01

The Dragor channel

The small river crosses the city centre in a regulated channel, with bridges and streets running along both banks. It is the clearest line on the whole map.

02

Širok Sokak

The city's main pedestrian street runs as one long, straight line through the centre. It stands out clearly against the smaller, irregular lanes of the surrounding old quarters.

03

Edge of the plain

East of the city, streets give way to the flat fields of Pelagonia. To the west, the ground rises toward Pelister, so the map has open land on one side and mountains on the other.

Why Bitola

A map that means something

People hang Bitola on their walls because they studied here, grew up walking Širok Sokak, or have family roots in the Pelagonia region. The map shows the city as someone who knows it remembers it: a river, a main street and mountains close by.

You can add a title, a subtitle such as a family name or a date, and your own coordinates line. Choose from Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand, whichever suits the room where it will hang.
