About this Blumenau map poster
Blumenau follows the Itajaí-Açu River as it bends through the Santa Catarina hills. From above, the city looks like a set of fingers: the dense centre sits on the riverbanks, and neighbourhoods stretch up side valleys, each with one road along the bottom. The steep, forested ridges between them stay almost blank on the map.
The town was founded in 1850 by German immigrants led by the pharmacist Hermann Blumenau, and that origin still shows in its architecture, its food and its annual Oktoberfest, one of the largest held outside Germany. The river that shaped the plan has also flooded the city several times, and that has influenced where people chose to build.
