The map

About this Borikhan map poster

Borikhan is in Bolikhamsai province in central Laos, inland from the Mekong plain. The landscape here is hilly and heavily wooded, and on a map the settlement looks modest. There is a small centre where the main roads meet, and villages are strung out along routes and streams, with large areas of forest in between.

In this part of Laos, rivers and valleys decide where people live and farm. Rice fields and gardens occupy the flatter ground near water, while slopes remain forested. The road network is sparse and follows valleys where it can, so the map shows a few strong lines rather than a dense web.

A Borikhan map poster is mostly about space and terrain. The frame is filled with a few firm road lines, the curves of streams and small clusters of buildings. In monochrome it becomes a calm, spare composition, which suits a quiet rural district far from the big cities.

Valley roads

The main roads follow valleys and flatter ground between hills. On a print they form a small number of strong, curving lines across a mostly open frame.

02

Village clusters

Settlements appear as small groups of buildings along roads and streams, not as a continuous town. They give the map a scattered, gentle rhythm.

03

Streams and forest

Watercourses wind through wooded country, and farmland sits close beside them. Their meandering lines are the most detailed feature on the map.
