The map

About this Udon Thani map poster

Udon Thani is one of the main cities of Isan, Thailand's northeastern region, set on the flat Khorat plateau. Its centre is organised around a few major roads and a large circular lake park, Nong Prajak, which shows clearly on the map as an open oval among the streets.

The city grew considerably during the 1960s and 1970s, when an air base nearby was used by United States forces during the Vietnam War. It is also the provincial capital closest to Ban Chiang, the prehistoric archaeological site listed by UNESCO, which lies to the east of the city.

An Udon Thani map poster shows a modern regional city with a clear shape: the lake park near the centre, the railway and highways running north toward the Mekong and Laos, and residential districts spreading across the plateau. It is an open, well-proportioned image of a place many travellers pass through.
