The map

About this Nakhon Ratchasima map poster

Nakhon Ratchasima, usually called Korat, is the largest city of north-eastern Thailand and the traditional gateway to the Isan region. Its map centres on a long rectangular old town enclosed by a moat, laid out in the seventeenth century during the reign of King Narai. Outside the moat, streets spread in every direction, and the railway and the Mittraphap Highway cut long lines across the plain.

At Chumphon Gate, on the western side of the old town, stands the monument to Thao Suranari. She is remembered for her part in resisting a Lao army in 1826. The monument square is one of the city's busiest meeting places. Ponds, reservoirs and the Lam Takhong river appear across the wider map, and the province reaches as far as Khao Yai National Park.

A Nakhon Ratchasima map poster makes the moated rectangle its central motif, the water drawn like a frame within the frame. The blocks, rail yards and ring roads around it complete the picture. The result reads both as a city plan and as a quiet piece of graphic design.

The moated old town

A long rectangle of water encloses the historic centre, its straight edges clearly visible from above. It is a rare surviving outline of a walled Thai provincial city.

02

Thao Suranari Monument

The monument square stands at Chumphon Gate on the western side of the moat. It marks the point where the old city meets the modern commercial streets.

03

Roads to Isan

The Mittraphap Highway and the north-eastern railway both pass through Korat. They are drawn as long, confident strokes heading on towards Khon Kaen and the rest of Isan.

Why Nakhon Ratchasima

A map that means something

Korat means a lot to people from Isan, and to anyone who studied, served or worked here before moving on. You can set the title to the city's Thai name or its nickname, add a subtitle with a year, and keep or edit the coordinates line.

The moat prints beautifully in Noir, where water becomes a thin pale line on dark paper, and Classic, Paper, Blueprint and Sand are also available. Order the $9 digital files in six sizes, or a matte printed poster with an optional wooden frame.
