The map

About this Bothaville map poster

Bothaville lies in the northern Free State, in some of South Africa's most productive maize country. The town is laid out on a regular grid of straight streets beside the Vals River. Nearby, Kgotsong has its own separate street pattern, a common arrangement in South African towns that dates from apartheid-era planning.

Agriculture defines the area, and Bothaville is known nationally as the home of NAMPO, one of the largest agricultural trade shows in the southern hemisphere. It is held each year just outside town. Around the built-up area the map is mostly open land, cut into the large rectangular parcels of commercial farms by gravel roads and field boundaries.

A Bothaville map poster reads as a study in straight lines: the town grid, the farm roads and the long highways across the highveld, with the river as the one curve among them. In black and white it is clean and spacious, a quiet tribute to a place tied to the land and the seasons.

Town grid

The older centre is a neat pattern of straight, evenly spaced streets. Rectangular blocks make it easy to read and give the poster an orderly core.

02

Vals River

The river winds past the town and is the only strongly curved line on the map. It gives the composition a natural counterpoint to the grid.

03

Farmland parcels

Beyond the town, straight roads and boundaries divide the plain into large fields. They fill the outer poster with a calm, geometric texture.
