The map

About this Bouna map poster

Bouna is in the far north-east of Ivory Coast, close to the borders with Burkina Faso and Ghana. From above it is a low, spread-out town. Its centre is a loose grid of streets, and at the edges the neighbourhoods become compounds and courtyards before they give way to wooded savanna. Roads leave in several directions toward border crossings and neighbouring towns.

The town was once the seat of the Bouna kingdom, and it remains an important centre for the region. The landscape around it is gently rolling and cut by seasonal streams. On a map these show as faint, branching lines that fill with water in the rainy months and fade in the dry season.

To the west and south stretches Comoé National Park, one of the largest protected areas in West Africa and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A Bouna map poster captures a town on the edge of that wilderness. Its compact streets sit against a very large area of open land that is shown in the monochrome style as quiet, empty space.

01

Gateway to Comoé

Bouna is close to the huge Comoé National Park, whose savanna and gallery forests fill much of the surrounding map with open, unbuilt land.

02

Roads toward the borders

Routes run out of town toward Burkina Faso and Ghana, marking Bouna as a meeting point in the region where three countries meet.

03

Seasonal streams

Fine watercourses branch across the savanna around the town. In a black and white print they show as delicate lines against the open space.
