The map
Bratsk is one of the most unusual city shapes in Russia. Instead of a single centre, it consists of several districts spread out along the Bratsk Reservoir, the huge body of water created by damming the Angara River in the Soviet era. On the map, the urban areas look like islands of streets set among forest and water, linked by long roads that can stretch for many kilometres.
The Bratsk hydroelectric station, completed in the 1960s, was one of the largest in the world at the time, and a road and railway run along the top of the dam. The city grew around this project and around heavy industry, including a large aluminium smelter. The planned districts have wide avenues and large blocks typical of Soviet town planning.
A Bratsk map poster turns this fragmented layout into a striking composition. The branching arms of the reservoir fill the frame with pale water shapes, while the districts show up as dense patches of streets on the shore. It is less a picture of one downtown than of a whole landscape reshaped by engineering, rendered in clean black and white.

The massive hydroelectric dam carries a road and railway across the river, a straight line cutting through the water on the map.
Each part of the city has its own grid of wide streets and large blocks, separated from the others by forest and open water.
