Burghausen is a town in Upper Bavaria on the Salzach, the river that forms the border with Austria here. It is known for its castle, which stretches for about a kilometre along a narrow ridge. It is often described as the longest castle complex in the world. On the map, the castle's outline is a long, thin strip between the river and a small lake.
The old town lies in a narrow space between the ridge and the Salzach, with its streets following the curve of the river. Below the castle's western side lies the Wöhrsee, a small lake popular for swimming. Beyond, a much larger modern town and a major chemical industry site spread out across the plateau.
