About this Buyo map poster
Buyo sits in southwestern Ivory Coast, beside the reservoir created by the Buyo dam on the Sassandra River. The lake is the defining feature of the area. Because it filled a network of river valleys, its shoreline is highly irregular, with long arms reaching into the surrounding land. From above, the town forms a compact area of streets on the edge of this water.
The Buyo dam supplies hydroelectric power, and the reservoir has shaped the local economy through fishing and farming. The region is also close to Taï National Park, one of the largest remaining areas of primary rainforest in West Africa and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Around Buyo, much of the land has been converted to cocoa and other crops, which shows up as a mix of fields and tracks.
