The map
Caeté is in Minas Gerais, a short distance east of Belo Horizonte, in hilly country shaped by the region's mining history. The map shows streets that follow the terrain: a small historic core in the valley and later neighbourhoods spreading up the slopes along winding roads. To the north rises the ridge of Serra da Piedade, a long, steep mountain line that dominates the surroundings.
The town grew out of the gold rush of the late seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, and colonial churches still stand in the centre. At the top of Serra da Piedade is the sanctuary of Nossa Senhora da Piedade, patron saint of Minas Gerais. It is a place of pilgrimage and has wide views across the region.
A Caeté map poster shows a town shaped by the hills rather than by a plan. The streets curve around slopes and follow the valleys, and the empty areas of forest and ridge give the drawing a natural rhythm.
The ridge north of town is a long, high mountain line. At the top is the sanctuary of the patron saint of Minas Gerais, visible for great distances.
The oldest part of town lies low in the valley, with short, irregular streets around colonial churches. It is a legacy of Minas Gerais's gold-mining era.
Newer neighbourhoods climb the slopes on curved roads that follow the terrain. They give the map an organic pattern very different from the planned grid of nearby Belo Horizonte.

Why Caeté
The map suits people from Caeté and the Belo Horizonte area, pilgrims who have climbed to the sanctuary, and anyone who loves the old mining towns of Minas Gerais. The hilly street pattern gives the poster a lot of character.
