The map
Catia La Mar occupies a thin band of flat land on Venezuela's Caribbean coast, with the sea on one side and the steep slopes of the coastal mountain range on the other. On a map the town is long and narrow, its streets squeezed into the space between the shoreline and the hills, with neighbourhoods climbing into the valleys wherever the ground allows.
To the east, the large, flat outline of Simón Bolívar International Airport dominates the map, its runways laid parallel to the coast. The main coastal road runs along the whole strip, and short streets branch off towards the beaches and up the slopes, giving the town a comb-like structure along the sea.
The town is part of the coastal state of La Guaira, the gateway between Caracas and the sea. A Catia La Mar map poster captures the unusual geometry of this place, with its long shoreline, the precise rectangles of the airport and the dense barrios pressed against the mountainside.

The built-up area stretches along the Caribbean in a thin band, with the shoreline drawn as a long, gently irregular line across the poster.
Behind the coast, streets climb into narrow valleys of the coastal range, creating finger-like extensions of the town that end where the slopes become too steep.
