The map
Chandannagar sits on the west bank of the Hooghly River, north of Kolkata. The town stretches along the waterfront, and the river forms its entire eastern edge. Streets run back from the bank into a dense network of lanes, ponds and older neighbourhoods. The broad curve of the Hooghly dominates the view from above.
The town was a French trading settlement for more than two centuries and remained under French control until 1950, when it became part of India. That period left the Strand, a riverside promenade lined with colonial buildings, along with churches and other institutions. Chandannagar is also known across Bengal for its Jagaddhatri Puja festival and its elaborate light installations.
A Chandannagar map poster shows a town defined by the river. The Strand runs parallel to the water, lanes fan inland, and many ponds dot the urban fabric. Across the Hooghly, the opposite bank adds a second strip of settlement. It is a map with a clear sense of place and a history unlike that of any neighbouring town.

The wide river forms the town's eastern edge. Its steady curve anchors the composition and separates Chandannagar from the settlements on the opposite bank.
Inland, a dense network of lanes runs among many small ponds, which is typical of towns in lower Bengal. The result is a rich, irregular texture.
