The map
Chaotian lies in the far north of Sichuan, within the city of Guangyuan, close to the border with Shaanxi. From above, the town is a long, narrow strip of streets following the Jialing River through steep mountain country, and the roads, the railway and the river share the valley floor. Forested ridges rise on either side and leave little flat land for building.
For many centuries the area has been a key passage between the Sichuan basin and the north. Sections of the ancient Shu roads ran through these gorges, and the nearby Mingyue Gorge is known for traces of old plank roads built into the cliffs above the river. Modern highways and rail lines now follow much the same route through the mountains.
A Chaotian map poster shows a place shaped entirely by its terrain: the river winding through the gorge, the thin line of the town along its banks and the mountains pressing in beyond. It suits people from Guangyuan and northern Sichuan, and travellers who have followed the old routes between Shu and the north.
The river runs through a narrow, winding valley, and the town stretches along its banks, giving the map a long, linear composition.
Nearby gorges squeeze the river between steep cliffs, where the ancient Shu roads once crossed the mountains on wooden plank walkways.
Railway, highways and river share the valley floor, forming parallel lines that thread through the mountains between the Sichuan basin and the north.

Why Chaotian
A map of Chaotian captures how people have lived and travelled in a landscape of steep slopes and narrow valleys. It is a fitting keepsake for people from northern Sichuan and a strong graphic piece for anyone who admires mountain landscapes.
