The campus

About this Charles University map poster

Charles University has no single campus. Its faculties, institutes and libraries are spread across Prague, many of them in historic buildings on both banks of the Vltava. The map is centred close to the river in the heart of the city. Here the tight medieval street plans of the Old Town and Malá Strana face each other across the water, linked by a series of bridges.

Founded in 1348 by Charles IV, it is the oldest university in Central Europe. Its historic seat, the Carolinum, stands in the Old Town near the Estates Theatre. The Clementinum, a former Jesuit college that now houses the National Library, lies close to the eastern end of the Charles Bridge. The university also has faculties in other Czech cities, but Prague remains its centre.

A Charles University map poster captures the Prague that students know best: the curve of the Vltava, the dense lanes of the Old Town, the castle district above Malá Strana and the green slope of Petřín hill. In black and white, the bridges crossing the river give the composition a clear rhythm.

01

Vltava bend

The river curves through the centre of Prague as a wide band of white. It divides the Old Town from Malá Strana and gives the whole map its structure.

02

Charles Bridge

This medieval stone bridge crosses the river between the two historic districts. It is the oldest of the bridges that span the Vltava within the frame.

03

Petřín and the castle

West of the river, the wooded slope of Petřín hill and the long outline of Prague Castle bring open, irregular shapes into the dense historic fabric.
