The map
Cipolletti lies in the Alto Valle of Río Negro, the irrigated valley that runs through the dry Patagonian plateau. On a map, the city's regular grid is surrounded by a fine pattern of long, narrow orchard plots, separated by irrigation channels and rows of poplars planted as windbreaks. The Neuquén River runs along the western side, with the city of Neuquén just across it.
The valley is one of Argentina's main areas for apples and pears, and packing sheds and cold stores are part of the local landscape. The Limay and Neuquén rivers join close by to form the Río Negro. Their channels, islands and wooded banks give the western and southern edges of the map a softer, more irregular texture.
A Cipolletti map poster shows a city that is inseparable from its irrigated farmland. There is the tidy urban grid, the finely lined orchards, and the curving rivers at the valley floor, with the arid plateau pressing in from beyond. Few landscapes show the effect of irrigation this clearly.
Long, narrow fruit plots surround the city in parallel bands. They are lined with irrigation channels and windbreaks and form one of the valley's most distinctive patterns.
The Neuquén River separates Cipolletti from the provincial capital across the water. Bridges connect the two cities over wooded riverbanks.
The green, cultivated valley ends sharply where the dry plateau begins. On the map this shows as a clear boundary between dense detail and open ground.
