About this Cluain Meala map poster
Cluain Meala, known in English as Clonmel, is the largest town in County Tipperary and lies on the River Suir in the south of Ireland. On the map, the river runs east to west along the southern edge of the old town, with islands and channels in the water, while the town spreads north from its banks.
The historic centre follows the line of its medieval walls, and parts of them survive, along with the West Gate. The Main Guard, a seventeenth-century courthouse, stands at the end of the main street. To the south, beyond the river, the land rises toward the Comeragh Mountains, and the novelist Laurence Sterne was born in the town.
