The map

About this Cumaná map poster

Cumaná lies on the northeastern coast of Venezuela, where the Manzanares River reaches the Gulf of Cariaco. From above, the river cuts through the city and meets the sea, while the coastline curves along the western edge. The older centre sits near a hill topped by a fortress, and newer districts extend along the coast and inland.

Spanish missionaries founded Cumaná in the early sixteenth century, and it is often described as the oldest European-founded city in continental South America. The Castillo de San Antonio de la Eminencia still overlooks the old town. The city is the birthplace of Antonio José de Sucre, a leading figure of South American independence. Across the water lies the Araya Peninsula, known for its salt flats.

A Cumaná map poster brings out the meeting of river, sea and hill. The Manzanares draws a strong line through the middle of the plan, and the coastline sets a clean boundary. The fortress hill interrupts the street pattern in the historic centre. From above, the old colonial core is still easy to read.

01

Manzanares River

The river runs through the city to the gulf, and bridges connect its two banks. On the map it divides the plan into two distinct halves before reaching the sea.

02

Fortress hill

The Castillo de San Antonio sits on a rise above the historic centre. Its star-shaped outline is surrounded by streets that bend around the slope.

03

Gulf shoreline

The coast faces the calm waters of the Gulf of Cariaco. It curves along the western side of the city toward beaches and fishing harbours.
