The map

About this Dachau map poster

Dachau lies northwest of Munich in Bavaria, on the edge of the Dachau moorland. Its old town sits on a hill above the Amper river, with the palace and its terraced gardens at the top. From above, the historic streets curve along the ridge, while newer districts spread across the lower ground towards the river and the railway, forming a much more open pattern.

In the late nineteenth century Dachau became an artists' colony, drawing painters to its light and the moorland landscape. The name is also permanently tied to the first Nazi concentration camp, opened in 1933 on the eastern edge of town and now a memorial site visited by people from around the world. Both histories are part of how the town is known today.

A Dachau map poster shows the contrast between the compact old town on its hill and the broad plain below. The Amper and its side channels draw soft lines through the frame, and the palace gardens appear as a clear green shape. It is a restrained image of a town with a complex past and a quiet present.

01

Palace on the hill

The Dachau palace and its terraced court garden crown the old town, and from the terrace there are views across the plain towards Munich on clear days.

02

The Amper river

The river and several mill channels run below the old town, adding flowing lines to the map and marking the transition to the lower districts.

03

Artists' colony

In the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries painters settled in Dachau, drawn by the landscape of the moor, and the town still keeps a strong connection to art.
