Dakhla sits near the end of a narrow peninsula that runs for about forty kilometres along the Atlantic coast of Western Sahara, a territory whose status remains disputed. On the map, the peninsula looks like a long finger of sand. It shelters a wide, shallow bay from the ocean swell.
The town itself is compact. Its streets form a fairly regular grid near the peninsula's tip, with the port on the bay side.
