The map

About this DeKalb map poster

DeKalb lies in the flat farmland west of Chicago, and its map is laid out on the square grid that shapes so much of the Midwest. The historic downtown runs along Lincoln Highway, one of the first transcontinental roads in the country. Around it, residential streets form regular blocks, and outside town the grid continues across the prairie as mile-square sections of fields.

The town has two strong identities. It is the home of Northern Illinois University, whose campus occupies a large area on the west side with curving paths, lagoons and big open lawns. It is also known as the birthplace of commercial barbed wire: Joseph Glidden patented his design here in 1874, and the invention helped change farming across the American West.

A DeKalb map poster shows the contrast between the straight grid of the town and the looser curves of the campus and the Kishwaukee River, which winds through the area. In black and white the pattern looks both ordered and relaxed. It suits graduates, faculty and families with roots in the town equally well.

01

NIU campus

Northern Illinois University fills the west side with curving walkways, large lawns and a lagoon, a softer pattern that stands out against the grid.

02

Lincoln Highway

The historic route runs east–west through downtown DeKalb, forming the main street and the central axis of the town map.

03

Kishwaukee River

The river winds through town and campus in loose bends, one of the few irregular lines in an otherwise regular Midwestern plan.
