The map

About this Detmold map poster

Detmold was the residence of the princes of Lippe, and its map still centres on the Residenzschloss and the park beside it. The old town around the castle keeps a compact pattern of streets, with half-timbered houses lining many of them. Beyond the centre, residential areas spread outward, and the Werre river runs through the town.

To the south-west, the land rises into the Teutoburg Forest, where the Hermannsdenkmal stands on a wooded hill. The monument commemorates Arminius and the battle against the Roman legions in 9 AD, and it is one of the most visited landmarks in the region. The forest's contours give the edge of the map a strong sense of relief.

Detmold is also home to the LWL Open-Air Museum, one of the largest in Germany, and to a well-known university of music. A Detmold map poster brings together castle, old town, river and forest, showing a small city whose shape was set by a court and whose setting is defined by wooded hills.

Why Detmold

A map that means something

Detmold suits music students, families from Lippe and anyone who has walked up to the Hermann monument on a Sunday. The map captures the castle, the old town and the forest in one quiet composition.

The title and subtitle can hold a name, a date or a short phrase, and the coordinates line can be edited. Five styles are available; Classic black & white suits the old town, while Noir gives the forest a dramatic edge.
