About this Dihok map poster
Dihok, also written Duhok, lies in a narrow valley in the north of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, not far from the borders with Turkey and Syria. On a map the city is shaped almost entirely by relief: built-up areas fill the valley floor and climb the lower slopes, while steep ridges on either side hold the streets in an elongated form.
North of the city, the Duhok Dam holds back a reservoir whose outline shows clearly among the hills. The city has grown considerably in recent decades, with new neighbourhoods spreading along the valley and onto higher ground, and it is home to the University of Duhok. Main roads follow the valley's length, with side streets rising in tighter, winding patterns.
