Simele, also written Sumayl, stands on low, open ground in Duhok Governorate in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq. From above, the town is compact. Its blocks are arranged along a few principal streets and thin out quickly into cultivated fields. Hills and mountain ridges rise at a distance, so the town itself reads as a tidy cluster on an otherwise open plain.
The name carries weight in modern history. In August 1933, Simele and the surrounding villages were the site of a massacre of Assyrian civilians by Iraqi forces. The event is remembered by Assyrian communities around the world every 7 August, now observed as Assyrian Martyrs Day. Today the town serves as a district centre for the farmland around it.
