El Bauga is in River Nile State in northern Sudan, on the banks of the Nile. The main feature of any map here is the river. It forms a broad band through the frame, and along each side runs a narrow strip of cultivated land. Beyond that strip, the ground opens into desert with almost no roads at all. The town lies inside the fertile strip, close to the water.
Settlements along this part of the Nile tend to stretch along the river rather than spread outward. El Bauga follows that pattern.
