This Oshima lies on the Noto Peninsula in Ishikawa Prefecture, the long arm of land that reaches north into the Sea of Japan. The area is shaped by the meeting of coast and hills. Low wooded ridges come close to the sea, and settlement fills the valleys and the narrow coastal strip between them.
On a map, that creates a layered composition. There is the coastline, then roads and houses along it, and then rice fields stepping up into the valleys before the forest takes over. The streets are irregular and follow the land, as they do in many older rural areas of Japan.
