El mapa
Shendi has a stark geography. The town lies on the east bank of the Nile in Sudan's River Nile State, and from above the pattern is clear: the river, a narrow band of cultivated land along the banks, the town's compact streets, and then open desert stretching away to the east.
For centuries Shendi was an important trading town on routes that crossed the Nubian region, and it remains a regional market today. The ancient royal city and pyramids of Meroë lie a short distance to the north, placing the town within one of the oldest settled landscapes in Africa.
A Shendi map poster shows that contrast. The Nile runs broad across the sheet, the town's grid of lanes sits close to its bank, and the emptiness of the desert gives the map a spare, almost architectural look.
The town lies along the Nile, and the river's wide channel, with its sandbanks and islands, forms the strongest line on the map.
A narrow belt of fields and irrigation channels runs along the bank, separating the water from the town and the desert beyond.
The pyramids and royal city of Meroë lie to the north, so the town belongs to a stretch of the Nile valley that has been settled since antiquity.
