El mapa
Tsubata lies just north of Kanazawa in Ishikawa Prefecture, at the point where the flat coastal plain meets the hills that run toward Toyama. Its map is divided in two: the western part is low, with rice fields, roads and the town centre, and the eastern part rises into wooded slopes cut by narrow valleys.
The town is a rail junction, where the Nanao Line toward the Noto Peninsula branches off from the main line along the coast. Those lines and the parallel roads form a strong framework on the plain, with housing and fields arranged along them in a fine, regular pattern.
A Tsubata map poster also contains a piece of Japanese history. The Kurikara Pass on the eastern border with Toyama is the site of the Battle of Kurikara in 1183, one of the best-known episodes of the Genpei War, and the old route over the hills still winds through the forest.
The Nanao Line to the Noto Peninsula splits from the main coastal line here, and the diverging tracks form a clear shape on the plain.
The old pass over the hills to Toyama, famous for a 12th-century battle, follows a winding route through forest on the town's eastern edge.
Flat rice fields and a compact centre in the west give way to forested ridges in the east, splitting the map into two distinct halves.
