Zaprešić lies at the western edge of the Zagreb metropolitan area, where the flat Sava valley meets the first slopes of the Hrvatsko Zagorje hills. The town grew along the railway and road to Slovenia. From above, its streets spread over level ground between the river plain and the rising, forested land to the north.
Its best-known landmark is Novi Dvori, the estate of Ban Josip Jelačić, the nineteenth-century Croatian leader, who is buried in the family chapel there. The manor, farm buildings and landscaped park form a green, open area within the town. On the map it shows clearly as a large, calm space among the residential blocks.
A Zaprešić map poster also shows the Krapina river curving south to meet the Sava, the lines of the railway and motorway, and the gradual change from the dense town centre to villages scattered on the hills. It is a map of a town where the capital, the countryside and the nearby border meet.
