The map
Esmeraldas is in the far northwest of Ecuador, on the Pacific coast where the Esmeraldas River reaches the ocean. The city's shape is set by these two bodies of water. The centre and port lie on the western bank of the river near its mouth, the Las Palmas area spreads along the beach to the north, and residential neighbourhoods climb the steep, green hills behind.
The city is an important port and energy hub for the country. It is the end point of the trans-Ecuadorian oil pipeline, which carries crude oil from the Amazon over the Andes, and it has the country's largest refinery. Esmeraldas is also a centre of Afro-Ecuadorian culture, known especially for marimba music and dance.
An Esmeraldas map poster shows the wide mouth of the river, the curve of the coastline, the port structures extending into the water, and the irregular patterns of streets that follow the valleys and ridges inland. It is a map in which the river, the ocean and the hills all play equal parts in shaping the city.
The broad estuary of the Esmeraldas River cuts through the map beside the city, with its banks, sandbars and bridges forming the most striking natural feature.
North of the centre, the city follows the Pacific shore along the beach at Las Palmas, with streets running parallel to the gently curving coastline.
Inland, streets climb steep slopes and follow valleys in irregular patterns, providing a looser texture that contrasts with the flatter areas near the water.

Why Esmeraldas
For people from the Ecuadorian coast, Esmeraldas means the river, the beach and the sound of marimba. A map of its estuary and hills keeps that home close, whether hung in Quito, Madrid or New York.
