The map
Portoviejo lies in the valley of the Portoviejo River in the coastal province of Manabí, a short drive inland from the Pacific. The city stretches along the valley floor, with its central grid laid out on fairly flat land. The surrounding hills keep development to a long, narrow shape. From above, the river forms a gentle curving line beside the town.
Founded by the Spanish in 1535, Portoviejo is one of the oldest cities in Ecuador. It is often called the city of the royal tamarinds, after the trees that once lined its streets. Its central squares and parks remain the focus of the grid, and the surrounding blocks spread outward in a fairly regular pattern.
The 2016 earthquake caused severe damage to the centre, and much of it has since been rebuilt, with new public spaces along the river. A Portoviejo map poster records the city as it stands today: the valley, the river, the regular grid and the hills that frame it on either side.

The colonial-era plan survives in a regular pattern of blocks around the main squares. It forms a clear, orderly core at the centre of the map.
Low hills rise on both sides of the valley. They leave open areas at the edges of the map and give the city its long, narrow outline.
