The map
Fāqūs is in Sharqia Governorate, toward the eastern edge of the Nile Delta, where cultivated land begins to give way to the desert approaches of the Suez region. From above the town is a dense cluster of streets surrounded on every side by fields, canals and drains laid out for irrigation.
The urban core is compact and closely built. Lanes run in several directions and meet at small open spaces, and roads and rail line lead outward toward neighbouring towns in the governorate. Canals run along several edges of the town, with their straight lines and gentle bends showing how water is distributed across the delta.
A Fāqūs map poster shows this relationship between town and farmland clearly. The fine grain of streets sits at the centre, and around it a web of watercourses and field boundaries fills the rest of the frame. It is a portrait of a delta town, shaped by water as much as by roads.
Straight and gently curving waterways run around and through the town, part of the network that carries Nile water across Sharqia's farmland.
The central district is tightly built, with narrow streets forming a dense pattern that contrasts with the open fields outside.
Around the town, long narrow plots and drainage lines form a textured grid that fills the map to its edges.
