The map
Ferkessédougou lies in the north of Côte d'Ivoire, in open savanna not far from the borders with Mali and Burkina Faso. From above, the town is a loose grid of streets spread across flat ground. It is crossed by the railway linking Abidjan with Ouagadougou and by major roads heading north toward the Sahel.
Its position has made it an important transit and trading town for the north of the country. The surrounding region is known for agriculture, especially sugar cane. Large irrigated sugar estates nearby appear on the map as broad geometric plots among the more irregular patchwork of smaller farms and woodland.
A Ferkessédougou map poster brings out the character of a crossroads town. Straight lines of rail and road cut across the frame, the streets between them form a relaxed, uneven grid, and seasonal streams wind across the savanna. It is a spacious, open composition with plenty of room around the town centre.
The railway runs through the town on its long route between the coast and Burkina Faso, a single strong line that anchors the whole composition.
Main roads converge on the town from several directions, making it a natural hub and giving the map a clear radiating structure.
Large irrigated sugar cane plantations nearby appear as broad, regular fields, in contrast to the finer mosaic of village farmland around them.
