The map

About this Ferokh map poster

Ferokh is a town in Kozhikode district in northern Kerala, on the banks of the Chaliyar River a few kilometres upstream from the sea at Beypore. The river is broad here, and on a map it forms the strongest shape in the composition, curving past the town while road and railway bridges cross it toward the southern bank.

The town's name is associated with Tipu Sultan, who planned a new capital here in the late eighteenth century during Mysorean rule over Malabar. Ferokh later became known for its tile industry: the red clay roof tiles made in its factories, alongside others in the Kozhikode area, became a familiar sight on buildings across Kerala and beyond.

Around the centre, homes spread among coconut palms along a mesh of lanes, and the landscape shows the typical Kerala pattern of dense, continuous settlement. A Ferokh map poster presents the town through its river, rail and road crossings, a clean graphic view of a place shaped by water and by a distinctive local craft.

Tile-making heritage

Ferokh's tile factories gave the town a reputation well beyond Kerala, and the industry remains an important part of its local identity.
