The map
Fīrūzābād lies in a valley in southern Fars province, enclosed by mountains. Just outside the modern town lies one of the most unusual shapes in Iranian archaeology: the ancient round city of Ardashir-Khwarrah, founded by Ardashir I, the first Sasanian king, in the third century. Its circular outline, about two kilometres across, is still visible from above.
The modern town has a more ordinary layout, with a central street network, orchards and fields around it, and roads following the valley. In the mountains nearby are the Palace of Ardashir and the fortress of Qal'eh Dokhtar, both part of the Sassanid Archaeological Landscape of Fars, which became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2018.
A Fīrūzābād map poster sets the modern town beside the traces of a planned circle drawn nearly two thousand years ago. Where the circular city's outline appears in the map data, it gives the composition a rare geometric element. Even without it, the valley setting and the orchards make a calm, carefully balanced print.
The ancient city of Ardashir-Khwarrah was laid out as an almost perfect circle. Its outline is one of the earliest large-scale examples of circular urban planning.
Mountains close in around the plain where the town lies. Roads follow the valley floor, giving the print a clear, contained structure.
Farmland surrounds the town in a patchwork of plots. It fills the space between the streets and the hills with a fine, even texture.
